Water, which is one of the basic elements on earth for life to exist on this planet of which 96 percent is saline found in oceans, but still has a vital role in different aspects of the planet. Though we were able to crack the mystery of the beginning of the universe to some extent, the formation of the oceans is a big mystery that puzzles the minds of researchers.
According to the primary scientific theories, most of the oceans' water could have come through comets and meteoroids 3 billion years ago, which changed the future of the planet earth. But few ancient scriptures tell a different kind of story in the formation of the oceans, according to the ancient Hindu books named Puranas, the gods played a vital role in reshaping the earth’s dimensions in ancient times.
The story of refilling of the earth’s oceans begins in the higher world’s or in the heavens when the two races of extraterrestrial races namely Asur's and Deva's were in a war for the supremacy over the universe, and the asura’s king Vritraasur with the help of Daitya's (Giants) were in the upper hand and the deva’s were losing the battle. The lord of Deva’s Indra/Zeus/Ashur with the help of wise sages created a weapon that showers thunderbolts(Vajra), and finally the king of Asura’s was defeated, and the remaining soldiers of the Asura’s and Daitya’s fled to the planet earth and took shelter beneath the oceans, and the deva’s who were eager to slay those remaining soldiers belonging to the Asura and Daitya (Giants) race. So the king of Devas (Gods) commissioned a noble sage named Agastya, who is a diverse knowledge of Vedas and celestial knowledge to drain the water of the earth’s oceans, so Devas could kill the remaining enemy soldiers who were hiding beneath the oceans waters. Agastya as per Indra/Zeus command did so, and the gods killed the remaining demon soldiers, once the deva’s accomplished their mission, they requested Agastya to refill the oceans of the earth, who which Agastya said, he was incapable of doing so as he does not possess the merit required for the task.

Now, Devas (gods) felt guilty as they have broken the cosmic law, and balance of life was disturbed on earth, so the gods with the help of another noble king turned sage thought of bringing the mighty river Ganga/Ganges from heavens to the earth to refill the oceans and regain the balance on planet earth. But Deva’s faced another problem, the impact of the river Ganga hitting the planet earth could wipe out the entire life on earth, so all the celestial devas approached Lord Shiva, who is considered to be the formless, omnipresent in the universe came to the rescue of devas, lord shiva then was able to slow down the might of river Ganges near Mount_Kailash by holding river Ganga in his hair knot and released her slowly onto the earth.

After this incident, the planet earth became a hotspot between a different race of extraterrestrials to show their might and there rose powerful civilizations of giants and gods on the planet earth as per different Puranas and other religious scriptures across the earth.
According to the Puranas, this was the turning point of the planet earth that changed the dimensions of this planet. Before the above incident, the earth was ruled by humans only, but after the incident of bringing the Ganges to earth from the heavens the news of the newly discovered planet was spread in heavens and the hells, many gods and goddess, angels, Giants, demons and many other creatures visited earth, built their own cities, trade rose between the gods and humans, new human civilizations rose and flourished across the earth with the help of gods, there is a recorded incident of gods mating with humans and birth of new superhumans.
