WHEN ANCIENT GODS PAUSED TIME! | THE UNTOLD STORIES FROM HINDU MYTHOLOGY

Our modern-day science fiction movies are filled with a lot of fantasies and fiction filled with zombies, incredible technologies, space travel, time travel and a lot more. Which are merely our dreams and concepts that are portrayed to large masses through media, though travelling in space is practical, but what about time travel? Is it possible to travel back in time? And what are the consequences? Has anyone done time travel in the past?
To know more about time travel and dilation, we need to understand what exactly time is; time is an illusionary measurement of sequences in events that has/is occurring or occurred. The time is not parallel and the same in the universe, time travels at different speed in several conditions.  In the universe every matter and energy is under constant changes, passing through different stages of their lifetime, in different time scales. And everything in the universe is co-dependent on each other for the creation and sustaining of the universe. Even a single atom adds up to the universe and has a role to play, and going back in time and changing an event can cause a drastic effect on future events.
This could be the reason the ancient Vedic scholars developed a time system (Kala) based on the movements of heavenly bodies in the cosmos. The Vedic time system follows a cyclical pattern, where seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, and ages get repeated after some time, just like a cycle of universes.
Units of time in Vedic time system
·         01 paramanu =  60,750th of a second
·         01 Truti = 29,6296 microseconds
·         01 tatpara = 2.96296 milliseconds
·         01 nimesha = 88.889 milliseconds
·         45 nimesha = 01 prana =  04 seconds
·         06 prana = 01 vinadi = 24 seconds
·         60 vinadi = 01 nadi = 24 minutes
·         60 nadis = 01 ahoratra  = 01 day
And most importantly there is a description of time dilation between earth and Devaloka (the planet where Devas/Gods reside) in Vishnu Purana, which states that one day in Devaloka = 1 human year and their life span is 4.5 million human years. Also, ancient scriptures say that devas are not gods, but being the highest mortals in the universe they have the responsibility to maintain law and order in the universe. But the supreme energies Vishnu and Shiva are considered to be the reason behind the creations (Brahma), and there are two instances where they paused time to the well-being of the planet earth:

INCIDENT 01: Kurukshetra
LORD KRISHNA PREACHING ARJUNA "BHAGAVAD-GITA" IN KURUKSHETRA

In the war of Kurukshetra (Mahabharata) when the two armies of Pandavas and Kauravas assembled in the battlefield, Arjuna lost his confidence in fighting seeing his relatives and friends in the enemies side, and Lord Krishna (Avatar of Lord Vishnu) paused the time and gave divine eyes and ears and preached the Bhagavad-Gita, which was the summary of all the Vedas (Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda) and showed his Vishwa-Roopa (cosmic body) to Arjuna, while all other humans were stunned as time was frozen by Vishnu. Later the time was resumed and the battle lasted for 18 days where Pandavas achieved victory over Kauravas army

INCIDENT 02: Sage Markandeya
LORD SHIVA KILLS YAMA/TIME TO RESCUE MARKANDEYA FROM DEATH

This story of sage Markandeya can be found in many Puranas among the 18 Puranas of Hinduism. The story begins with their parents begging Lord Shiva for a child and Lord Shiva granted them a boy, but with only 16 years of life on earth. Markandeya grew up to be a great devotee of Lord Shiva from an early age, and on the destined day of death lord Yama/ Time appeared before him to take his life, but Markandeya was in deep meditation in front of Shiva linga and Yama forcefully threw his noose to grab the boy but accidentally along with boy the noose also circled the Shiva linga, the furiously watching Shiva emerged out of the linga and killed the Yama and rescued the boy. As  the lt, the universe was stunned, there was no time, movement, expansion, and changes. Vishnu including all devas appeared before lord Shiva and requested him to revive the time/Yama, and the Yama was revived from death and the universe was once again alive to normal. And later Markandeya was blessed with immortality and later taken to higher worlds after his period on earth was over.
